Let's Talk About Fuel Tank Gauges!

- 3:02 pm - May 15th, 2023

The gauge located on the top of your fuel tank is there to provide you with an approximate reading of how much fuel is left in your storage tank. It works by measuring the level of Oilheat in the tank and NOT the specific number of gallons you have left. Because of that, a tank reading should always be taken as an approximate estimate of the fuel you have left and not an exact amount.

How Do They Work?

Your tank gauge will usually look like a clear plastic tube with a red or yellow disk on the inside and number markings for Full, 3/4, 1/2, 1/4, etc. That disk is attached to a float inside the tank, and as the fuel is consumed, the float falls accordingly and gives you the reading you see at that time.

What You Should Know.

A reading on your fuel tank should only be used as a guide to determine your fuel levels. The best way to discover the accuracy of your tank gauge is to check the reading after we fill it up. Even though it is completely full, you might get a reading of 3/4 or 7/8. This discrepancy should also be considered if you see a low reading of 1/4 or 1/8 full when there is likely much more Oilheat left in the tank.

Knowing how to properly read and assess the gauge on your fuel storage tank is a useful tool, even for our Automatic Delivery customers. If you need help reading your gauge or think it is not showing an accurate level, call us at 804-231-5798 or contact us here to schedule a service.
