What are safety data sheets?
A Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is a standardized document that provides essential information about the properties, potential hazards, and safe handling procedures of a hazardous chemical or product.
Formerly known as Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), these documents follow a globally unified 16-section format set by the United Nations’ Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS).
What information is included in a safety data sheet?
- Chemical identification: Product name, manufacturer information, and recommended uses
- Hazard Identification: Physical (flammability), health (toxicity), and environmental risks
- Safe handling and storage: Guidelines for safe usage, ventilation, and incompatible materials
- Emergency measures: First aid protocols, firefighting procedures, and spill response
- Protection and control: Recommended personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves or respirators
What is the purpose of a safety data sheet?
